On June 2, four Amityville Memorial High School students enjoyed an afternoon with State Sen. Monica R. Martinez.

Earlier this year, tenth graders Abigail Brown, Cynai Gordon, Angie Ventura Melgar, and Maleek Solomon were named as winners in Senator Martinez’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay and Art contest. The contest was held in conjunction with Senator Martinez’s recognition of Black History Month. Participants were tasked with writing an essay or creating a work of art that pays tribute to those who continue to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy or demonstrates how we can build bridges between all communities.

Senator Martinez met with the high school’s honorees to commend them, and she treated them to pizza and drinks. Additionally, she spoke to students about her career in politics.
