Amityville Students Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Through Music, Dance and Tradition

Students from Edmund W. Miles Middle School and Amityville Memorial High School came together for a special Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Oct. 28, showcasing the rich history, traditions and cultural contributions of Hispanic communities through music, dance, poetry and student performances.
Held in the Amityville Memorial High School auditorium, the celebration embraced the theme “Unidos Somos Más” (United We Are More), highlighting the importance of cultural pride, unity and belonging.
The evening featured three acts: Nuestras Raíces (Our Roots), Nuestra Historia y Tradiciones (Our History and Traditions) and Nuestro Ritmo (Our Rhythm).
Students shared their talents through poetry readings, orchestral and band performances, cultural presentations, comedy and traditional dances. Highlights included a performance of “De Colores” by the district’s chamber orchestra, a presentation recognizing influential historical figures, and musical and dance performances celebrating Hispanic heritage.
The program also featured New York State Senator Monica R. Martinez as the keynote speaker, providing students and families with an opportunity to hear from a community leader during the celebration.
A special staff recognition ceremony, “Honrando a Quienes Inspiran” (Honoring Those Who Inspire), acknowledged educators who make a difference in the lives of students.
The celebration concluded with energetic musical and dance performances, including a bachata showcase and a group performance of “Rompe & Baile Inolvidable.”
Beyond the performances, the evening provided students with meaningful opportunities to explore their cultural identities, develop confidence, celebrate their talents and share their heritage with the larger school community.
By bringing together middle and high school students, educators and families, the event reinforced Amityville’s commitment to creating welcoming learning environments where diverse backgrounds are recognized, valued and celebrated.
