Second graders in Ms. Desiderio and Ms. DelGiorno’s class at Northwest Elementary School in Amityville recently completed their unit, “Our Incredible Earth.”

This unit focused on different ways the planet changes by reading fiction and nonfiction selections. Students were able to choose between one of three ways that the planet changes: earthquakes, tsunamis or volcanoes. Their goal is to produce an infomercial that persuades the viewer to agree with their opinion about the most exciting way that the earth changes. Ms. Desiderio and Ms. DelGiorno collaborated with other second grade teachers to design research materials and graphic organizers for students to use to develop their infomercials. Students then used the graphic organizers to create scripts that were finally used to produce their infomercial on the app, Canva.

Second graders really enjoyed completing this project, and teachers were especially pleased with the way their students were able to discuss different ways the planet changes. Students were able to look back into the unit readings to find facts and recall information. All modalities of learning were included during this project such as reading, writing, speaking and listening as well as using technology.

Ms. Desiderio and Ms. DelGiorno both agreed that the best part was watching all of their students’ creative infomercials.
