On May 19, students at Northwest Elementary School in Amityville had an exciting hands-on learning experience as they explored the world of aeroponic gardening. Thanks to the support of Western Suffolk BOCES and Plant Up’s School Seed Program, the school received a tower garden to incorporate into its curriculum.

The visit was led by Plant Up’s CEO and founder Lety Algeri, who educated the students on the science behind aeroponics, an innovative method of growing plants without soil. Plant Up is an organization that aims to revolutionize the way communities grow, learn and thrive through sustainable vertical gardening. Following the lesson, the students worked together to build their very own tower garden, applying what they had learned in a fun and interactive way.

In the coming weeks, students will care for and observe the growth of lettuce, basil, kale, and other plants, gaining firsthand experience in sustainable farming and healthy food production.
