Amityville’s youngest learners at Northeast Elementary School spent the past few weeks learning all about animals.

Students learned about different animals’ characteristics, life cycles and habitats. As part of Northeast’s unit on animals, some classes chose an animal of their choice, and together with their families, created a habitat for that animal. Each habitat featured a different theme such as farms, jungles, forests, beaches, and the deep blue sea.

Parent Empowerment Program thrives at Northeast Elementary School

Northeast Elementary School in Amityville is proud to celebrate its third year of the school’s Parent Empowerment Program.

Under the leadership of Northeast Principal Dr. Pauline Collins, the program provides parents with the information and resources needed to help their children while assisting them in navigating the school system. The parents and students meet at Northeast every Saturday morning where they enjoy breakfast and participate in a children’s program that would mirror the same theme for the day.

The school’s social worker, Ms. Jessenia Bermudez, was very instrumental in securing partnerships with organizations such as Hope for Youth, the Crime Victims Center and Cornell Cooperative Extension, among other programs. Hope for Youth conducts a three-part positive parenting training program which focuses on training confident, happy and resilient children. The Crime Victims Center provides education and awareness on identifying and protecting children against sexual abuse while the Cornell Cooperative Extension educates parents on nutrition and healthy eating.

The district would like to thank all of the educators who continue to make this program a strong tool for our parents and students to grow together in Amityville.
