AMITYVILLE HS COACH TAPPED FOR YOUTH PROGRAM
To Represent U.S. in Developing Life Skills, Athletics in the Caribbean
The Amityville School District is pleased to announce that Amityville Memorial High School social worker and track and field coach Reynolds Hawkins has been invited to represent Long Island Partners in a major Partners of the Americas project for the Caribbean countries of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. As the Long Island chapter’s Chairman of Youth and Sports, Mr. Hawkins’s 10-day mission involves the development of a Youth Employment Through Sports plan in St. Vincent. Such a plan is designed to promote sports-based activities to assist youngsters in the acquisition of life skills for future employment in a global economy.
Partners of the Americas (POA) is a people-to-people exchange program serving Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. Its mission is to connect volunteers, institutions, and communities in order to serve and change lives across the hemisphere.
Mr. Hawkins has been a POA volunteer for more than 20 years, sharing his expertise in the areas of youth and sports. He was instrumental in the training of St. Vincent athletes for the Caribbean Olympics and the 1988 Olympic Games. Mr. Hawkins is a private practice social worker in addition to his work in the district, and a member of the Suffolk County Anti-Bias Task Force.
Amityville Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Health Anthony Cerullo remarked that Mr. Hawkins is one of the district’s finest assets. “It is not every day that a district employs an Olympic coach,” Mr. Cerullo stated. “His expertise is invaluable to our students and to young people in St. Vincent.”
In a letter announcing Mr. Hawkins’s appointment, Long Island Partners Committee Executive Director Patricia Hill Williams stated, “We believe that Mr. Hawkins is one of Long Island’s greatest assets in the area of youth and sports, and he has unselfishly shared his expertise with Partners of the Americas for more than twenty years. We look forward to the support of Amityville High School to join Mr. Hawkins and Long Island Partners in this endeavor.”
