Art Opportunities For Amityville Students
Amityville Memorial High School students had the opportunity to get creative through the district’s Arts in Education program when professional artist James W. Cook facilitated a comprehensive, 3-day residency program entitled “Wire Sculpture: From Drawing to Finished Sculpture.” During the interactive sessions, Mr. Cook demonstrated the design process he uses to create his famous 15-foot metal figure sculptures.
Inspired by Mr. Cook’s vision, students began with basics, creating simple line drawings as the foundation pieces that were transformed into the students’ final wire models. Learning how to use tools including pliers, wire cutters and serrated scissors, as well as proper techniques such as bending, curling and zig-zagging, students expressed their individual style, making each design unique, and splashes of color to their metal piece to make their artwork pop. Selecting specific pieces to build the large-scale sculpture, students examined the science and engineering skills necessary to create artwork of such magnitude.
