A Warrior Weekend
First Ever Friday Night Football Game Results in a Warrior Romp as ‘70 Team Honored
Amityville Memorial High School celebrated Homecoming weekend in style with the first-ever Friday night Homecoming football game under the lights. The Varsity Warriors Football team did not disappoint, as the team rolled to a 35-6 victory over Rocky Point.
After a hard-fought first half, the Warriors took leads of 8-0 and 15-0 late in the third quarter, before running away with the game in the fourth quarter. Earlier in the day, Amityville High School held a pep rally on Lou Howard Field to stir excitement among the students and coaches. The day’s enthusiasm carried over into the night, as Da’rell Hatcher led the way with 141 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Varsity Warriors. Quarterback Willie White added 65 yards on the ground and passed for 51 yards, including a touchdown. Ian Brown and Sean Walters added scores of 45 and 13 yards, respectively.
At halftime, Amityville celebrated members of the legendary 1970 Varsity Football team on the 40th anniversary of their undefeated season. Players were announced and cheered as they gathered at the 50-yard line of Lou Howard Field, who was himself present for the celebration. The 2010 Homecoming King and Queen were also named at halftime. This year Chuckquan Hubbard and Janna Jackson took the crowns. The two were at the front of the procession for the Homecoming Parade on Saturday afternoon. Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Williams and the Board of Education led the way down Broadway, waving to cheering community members lined up along the sidewalk.
The Varsity Girls Soccer squad later hosted Westhampton, finishing in a 1-1 tie. The Boys Soccer team closed the weekend festivities under the lights, falling to Shoreham Wading River 4-1. The Amityville football alumni provided funding to rent the lights for the games.
