SENIOR AWARENESS A DAY OF RECONNECTING
During a student’s elementary through high school career, friendships are made and lost, and students sometimes never reconnect with one another. Amityville Memorial High School’s Senior Awareness Day, however, provided the opportunity for approximately 130 students to spend time in fun-filled, small and large-group activities to break down existing boundaries and reconnect with peers.
“Through some of the activities, the students learned how much they have in common,” teacher and facilitator Jason McGowan explained. “They also enjoy the time the day provides to catch up with old and new friends.”
Senior Awareness Day commenced with breakfast in the cafeteria and was followed by games on the field such as Cross the Line and the Human Chair. One of students’ favorite exercises was Memory Lane, during which they wrote on an index card their favorite Amityville memory and the way in which they would like to be remembered once they graduate this June. There was a tug-of-war and mummy wrap competition, dance activities, athletic games, and a beanbag toss. During the afternoon, many of the activities were centered at the local beach, where students gathered to eat lunch, listen to music and play sports.
