Sancho Barrett a Champ Again
Amityville Memorial High School senior Spring Boys Track star Sancho Barrett has won the National Federation 110-meter hurdle championship with a time of 14.26 seconds. It was the second consecutive Federation title in the 110-meter for Sancho, who set a time of 13.98 seconds as a Suffolk qualifier one month earlier.
The Federation title includes athletes from private and public schools. Just hours earlier during the competition, held in Caledonia, New York, Sancho won the New York State championship in the 110-meter with a run of 14.05. He is also the Class B New York State Athlete of the Year with first-place rankings in the 55-meter hurdles and fourth-place rankings in both the 200 and 400-meters.
“He’s probably the greatest track and field athlete to come out of Amityville Memorial High School,” said Amityville Memorial High School Director of Athletics and Physical Education teacher Ron Forman of Sancho.
In May, Sancho signed a letter of intent to attend Penn State University on a full scholarship. He intends to major in mechanical engineering and continue his running, with the hopes of someday representing the United States in the Olympics.
“I just want to continue to be successful,” said Sancho, who credited Boys Track Coach Reynolds Hawkins for driving him to excellence.
“Sancho’s been a pleasure to work with and a true asset to the Boys Track team and its history,” added Coach Hawkins, whose team finished a terrific season, with a total of four athletes receiving state honors.
