Samurai Warriors Visit Freshmen Global Classes
In assessing feudal Japan the most outstanding charateristic was the Samurai warrior. Known as a fierce and loyal fighter many Samurai were also gifted poets and artists. Their society was heavily ritualized down to their fighting techniques. In fact, the making of the Katana (the Japanese sword) was done by hand. The belief being that the indiviual sword housed the spirit of the warrior handling it.
To assist our students in understanding these concepts Mr. Hendrickson, a martial arts expert, visited the 9th grade Global classes of Mr. O'Brien and Ms. Maisel. In the lesson Mr. Hendrickson and Mr. O'Brien demonstrated the methodology of Japanese sword fighting. For the purposes of the class Mr. Hendrickson swung and Mr. O'Brien ducked. |
