THE POWER OF ART

The outstanding artistic talents and humanitarian efforts of seventeen Amityville Memorial High School students were showcased as they recited the pledge and officially became members of the National Art Honor Society (NAHS).

“The purpose of the NAHS is to encourage members to develop as artists, to make a contribution to their local community, and to use their abilities to give back to the world, ” stated NSHA advisor Jayne Grasso.

Last year the students participated in the “Memory Project,” a unique international endeavor in which high school students create portraits for children in orphanages around the world. The Amityville students, who were each given a photo of a child from Ukraine, spent countless hours creating individual portraits, using the photos as a guide. The finished products, which will provide a lifelong memory of their childhood, were delivered to the children, who then were photographed holding their portraits so the artists could see the joy their talent and caring had created. During the induction ceremony the photos were shared for all to enjoy.

In addition to the Memory Project, members of the NAHS also fundraised to provide art supplies for the Amityville Youth Center and donated their time and talents to decorate the windows of the center. Congratulations to the following inductees: Flor Alvardo, Dominque Jean-Baptiste, Cindy Coffee, Ashley H. Desir,
Kristen Emmerich, Tiara Thomas Ford, Ashley Fye, Ian Gayle, Katrina Greene, Rebecca Levenberg, Anthony McKay, Herminia Reyes, Giselle Rivas, Manuel Gomes Small, and Melissa Zarou.
