A NIGHT OF SENIOR STARS IN AMITYVILLE
Members of the Class of 2010 Recognized at Awards Ceremony
Applause resounded through the auditorium of Amityville Memorial High School as 81 graduating seniors were honored for their exemplary academic and extracurricular performance. Many of the 208 awards handed out during the evening included scholarships from local donors.
Amityville Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Williams pondered the meaning of “success” during his opening comments. He stated that students in the district are successful in three key areas, which include: stepping out of a comfort zone to meet people with diverse backgrounds; getting to know teachers; and giving back to the community.
“Whatever yardstick you use to measure success, you are all poised to succeed,” Dr. Williams remarked.
As part of the evening’s festivities, the honored students viewed a video prepared by technology teacher Steve Carbo, which featured the Top 25 students in the Class of 2010. The Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Chris LaMarca, also performed Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock, while seniors Rickens Anantua, Nichole Turner, and Davida Walker led the assembly in the singing of the National Anthem.
The students were called one-by-one to receive their awards. Seniors who were presented with the greatest number of awards were Ashley Moreno and Jamilah Lindo. Both received the President’s Outstanding Academic Excellence Award. Fourteen seniors were also recognized for their participation in the Early College Program at Suffolk County Community College and were presented with gold tassels to wear on graduation day.
During his closing remarks, Amityville Memorial High School Principal Dr. Scott Andrews thanked the students for spending the last four years of their academic careers in the Amityville Public School District. He also encouraged the seniors to explore their passions as they choose careers in the future. “Seek to pursue a career you are passionate about,” Dr. Andrews stated, “and it won’t feel like work.”
