Group Effort to Improve Library Enhances Educational Enviroment

Through the generosity of Amityville resident and parent T.J. Fitzgerald and Nickerson Inc., and with the support of Central Administration and the Amityville Board of Education, students at Amityville Memorial High School are enjoying their school library even more after Mr. Fitzgerald and his company became involved in a beautification and renovation project that has provided many opportunities for upgrades of the school library, newly dubbed the Library Media Center. In addition to providing all new maple furnishings, including shelving, a circulation desk, tables and chairs, nine new computers were added to the existing nine that the library always had, allowing more students to have access to state-of-the-art technology in the comfort of their own school library. The district maintenance crew, under the direction of Dave Becker, also got involved in the library improvements in an in-house construction project that enlarged the current library space, and the custodial crew also lent their support and services to help the project run smoothly.

The Library Media Center remains open after school every day between 2:30 and 3:30 for students’ convenience. The district provides many databases for students to use both in the Center and at home via remote access, which assists students not only with their school assignments but also helps with the college search and application process. Also available for students is World Book Online and Grolier Online, which can be accessed by students with a username and password provided by Library Media Center Specialist Elaine Gross. The Center also features a mounted LCD projector, which teachers can use to transmit their lessons on a large screen and a 60-inch plasma television, which is tuned to CNN and other news media on a daily basis. Both technologies provide a more comprehensive teaching and learning experience for Amityville Memorial High School staff and students. High school Principal Dr. Scott Andrews, a firm believer in the power of a positive learning environment, facilitated the purchase of panoramic artwork to adorn the walls of the new Library Media Center.

“We now have a beautiful academic space at Amityville Memorial High School,” stated Library Media Specialist Elaine Gross. “Our students and staff are proud of their new learning environment.”
