Amityville High School Students Helping the Homeless

A group of Amityville Memorial High School (AMHS) students who are dedicated to good causes recently volunteered their time to help the homeless. The Warrior Awareness Club (WAC), named after the school’s athletic moniker/nickname “The Warriors,” participated in the “Have a Heart for the Homeless” vigil held at Farmingdale State College. More than 40 members of AMHS WAC and their advisor, teacher Jason McGowan, lent a hand distributing food, clothing and other needed items to the homeless at the event, held at the college’s Roosevelt Hall. They also entertained young children on hand and even painted faces for fun. A joint candle lighting to keep the homeless in mind highlighted the vigil.

AMHS WAC members collected donations of unused baby items, cleaning supplies, toiletries, coats and other clothing and non-perishable foods leading up to the event. They are pictured here with Mr. McGowan holding their candles. Other photos show them handing out coats, food, painting faces and looking after the youngsters on hand.
