AMHS Teacher and Students Participate in SUNY Farmingdale STEP Program
Science and Technology Program (STEP)
The Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) was established at Farmingdale State College during the academic year 1989-1990. It is one of about 50 programs in New York State serving middle and high school students. STEP offers academic programs, enrichment activities and support services aimed at enhancing the skills and competencies necessary for students in grades 7-12 for entry into college- level programs in science, engineering, technology, health sciences, and licensed professions. The academic programs offered by STEP include lab-based instruction in such areas as mathematics, biosciences, physical sciences, health sciences, computer applications, engineering technology, aviation, management technology, and written communication. The enrichment programs of STEP include college-level courses, in-school tutorials in mathematics and sciences, team work and leadership development opportunities as well as hands-on projects in science and engineering technologies. The support services offered by STEP include academic counseling and advising, college entry test preparations, arrangements for summer internships, field trips to industry sites and academic institutions, and opportunities for participation in regional conferences.
Amityville Memorial High School students participated in advanced studies in Biology each Saturday morning. Laboratory activities ranged from DNA extraction from plants and animal cells to physiological functions of animals.
