Amityville High School Students Help with the Great South Bay Cleanup Project
A group of Amityville Memorial High School (AMHS) students recently participated in a cleanup of the Great South Bay. Students were proud to have been part of a cleanup effort that has collected more than 70,000 lbs of garbage over the last few years.
"Wearing rubber boots and trudging through the mud, I had no idea that this mucky experience would be so impressionable,” said AMHS student Meghan Brooks, who was one of hundreds of volunteers –nine of which were AMHS students–who turned up for the annual Great South Bay Cleanup. “It has meant a lot to see my neighbors working side by side along with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Coast Guard.”
In the five years since this event has started, the endangered osprey bird species has moved back into Great South Bay area.
“It has been rewarding to be a part of this community project that benefits all of us," added Meghan. AMHS students who joined Meghan for the cleanup were Dylan Miller, Peter Slater, Symone Jacas, Kelly Siry, Riley Hatt, Ashlei Fulton, Jesus Stiven Nunez, and Troy Mahabeer.
Congratulations to all of the volunteers for helping to revitalize the Bay and serving as stewards of the environment.
