Amityville Student Writers Recognized by Suffolk County Executive

The Amityville Public School District was recognized by the Suffolk County Executive’s Office of Women’s Services for its participation in “The Woman I Most Admire” essay contest. The annual competition included over 1,700 entries from 48 schools and Amityville’s talented authors represented the top in the county.

Amityville Memorial High School student Juan Garcia impressed the judges with his essay about his mother and placed third in the high school division. Awards of excellence were given to high school student Tracy Governanti and Edmund W. Miles Middle School students Andy Laurent and Thushea Dieujuste.

Teachers were also commended for their instruction and guidance and two Suffolk County teachers were recipients of the “Apple of Our Eye” for the overall quality of all their students’ entries. One of these distinguished awards was given to Amityville Memorial High School English teacher Christopher Roth.

In addition to the individual awards, both Amityville Memorial High School and Edmund W. Miles Middle School received proclamations to honor their high level of engagement in this project, as well as the quality and variety of their students’ work.

The dedication and success of Amityville’s students, teachers and schools is a testament to the district’s commitment to academic achievement among all students.
